One of Monaco's underused luxuries is position. West along the corniche: Èze's eagle-nest village, the gardens of Cap Ferrat, the deep bay of Villefranche. East: Menton's lemon-scented old town and the Italian border. All of it sits within a thirty-minute drive — which means the Riviera's famous stops can be a relaxed half-day from your Monaco hotel rather than a logistical project.
Èze — the eagle's nest
Èze climbs a cliff between Monaco and Nice: a medieval village of stone lanes and galleries, crowned by the Jardin Exotique's cactus garden and one of the coast's great views. The Fragonard and Galimard perfumeries at the village base run short factory visits. Go before ten or after four — midday in summer belongs to the tour buses.
Cap Ferrat — the peninsula of villas
Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is the Riviera's villa peninsula. The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, with its themed gardens overlooking the sea on both sides, is the one you can visit and is worth every minute. Walk part of the coastal path around the point, then swim at Paloma beach on the eastern side. A chauffeured half-day covers the villa, the walk and lunch in the village port.
Villefranche and Menton
Villefranche-sur-Mer has the deep harbour and the ochre old town; Menton, pressed against the Italian border, trades glamour for gardens, lemons and some of the best-value lunches on this stretch of coast. Either pairs naturally with Èze or Cap Ferrat in a single unhurried day.
Three ways to do it
- Chauffeur — a car with driver runs €75–120 per hour: a half-day to Èze and Cap Ferrat, or a full day east to Menton. Maximum flexibility, zero parking.
- Private tour — a licensed guide with transport, for the context: the Rothschilds, the perfumeries, the villages. See our private tours.
- By water — a day charter (from €1,200 per boat) turns the same coastline into swim stops: anchor beneath Èze, lunch at a waterfront table, home along the cliffs at sunset. For a fast hop or a scenic loop, helicopter flights run €390–740.
